DENTAL BRIDGE TREATMENT OVERVIEW

What Are The Advantages Of A Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges are practical tooth replacement options because they get added support from your surrounding teeth. The replacement tooth fills in the space to feel just like your natural teeth. You smile can be transformed and give you a stunning new look!

GIVING YOU A FULL SMILE

One of the greatest advantages of a dental bridge is the natural, full smile it will give you. Each dental bridge is custom-crafted to look and feel like your natural teeth. The bridge, made from an impression of your teeth, blends in and gives you a stunning smile.

UTILIZING THE RIGHT TYPE OF BRIDGE

A dental bridge may consist of several crowns bonded together to form a “bridge” between teeth, closing in the gap with a replacement tooth. Your bridge may be an implant or a traditional bridge with dental crowns on either side. The crowns are anchored to your natural teeth to provide support.

Who Is Likely To Need A Dental Bridge?

Any patient who is missing a tooth may want to consider a dental bridge to fill in the gap in their smile. Having a space between your teeth may put extra strain or pressure on your bite. The teeth may start to shift forward or backward, causing tooth misalignment.

People who are missing teeth often incur problems with eating or speaking due to food getting stuck in the gap or whistling that might occur when speaking. A dental bridge can also keep your teeth from shifting out of place!

Although dental implants are a great tooth replacement option, some patients may decide to go with a dental bridge instead. For instance, dental bridges are good for:

  • Patients with low bone density.
  • Patients who would like a more economic tooth replacement option.
  • Patients who are missing two teeth right next to each other.
  • Patients who would like a quicker treatment option.

What Does A Dental Bridge Look Like?

Dental bridges are made from several dental crowns connected together. The most common dental bridge consists of three crowns; the two outer crowns and the middle replacement tooth. These three parts form a bridge between your teeth.

The outer crowns are bonded to your natural teeth to form a secure and stable foundation for the dental bridge. The crowns are also designed to look and feel like your natural teeth. The entire bridge is made using an impression we take of your bite.

Our dental crowns are also color-matched to your natural teeth to give you a beautiful, stunning smile! You won’t need to worry about people noticing your dental work because the bridge blends seamlessly into your natural smile.

What Types Of Dental Bridges Are Available?

People are all different, and that means they have different situations when it comes to oral health. Some people have issues with molars going missing while others may lose a front tooth. In order to provide the appropriate treatment for your needs, we’ll schedule a consultation to talk about the different types of dental bridges and how they work.

We offer several types of dental bridges including a porcelain bridges, zirconia bridges, and All-on-4® treatment concept or All-on-6 implant-supported bridges. Understanding more about each of them can help you decide which option might work for you.

  • Porcelain Dental Bridge. This type of bridge is made from several dental crowns and a replacement tooth that are bonded together. The crowns on either end are attached to your natural teeth. The bridge is made from porcelain and is designed to blend in with your natural smile.
  • Zirconia Bridge. This type of bridge is made from zirconium oxide. This high-quality material is durable and safe. Zirconia material has the same type of translucent hue as your natural teeth, and the material is easily accepted as comfortable and natural by your mouth.
  • All-on-4® Treatment Concept or All-on-6 Bridge. This type of bridge is secured by 4 or 6 dental implants. The bridge can be attached to a few dental implants rather than attaching each tooth to a separate implant. Many of our patients like this type of bridge of denture because the healing time is quicker. In fact, some patients can have their bridges permanenently placed in the same day as they receive their implants.

HOW DOES A DENTAL BRIDGE PROCEDURE WORK?

Procedure Overview

Each dental bridge is custom made and usually requires two visits to our office. During the first appointment we’ll take an impression of your bite so the dental bridge blends seamlessly with your natural smile. Your dental bridge is made from high-quality materials and then sent to our office for placement. The second appointment is when we check the bridge and permanently bond it in place.

Abutment Teeth Preparation

The abutments are simply the dental crowns attached to either side of the pontic tooth. Before we can place the abutments, we may have to make changes to your natural teeth so the bridge can be bonded into place.

Before we take an impression of your bite, we prepare your teeth for the abutments. This may include recontouring and reshaping the teeth so the crowns fit snugly into place. Reshaping can also include removing a small amount of enamel from your tooth to make room for the protective dental crown.

Making small changes to your teeth is essential for a tight-fitting, protective dental bridge. Our experienced dental team and expert dentists can show you how recontouring works and talk to you about next steps.

Impressions

We believe in giving our patients beautiful and stunning smiles that they love to share! One of the ways we can create a beautiful smile is to take an impression of your bite and your teeth. This gives the lab a detailed map of your teeth and shows them how to make a dental bridge that will look and feel fantastic!

Impressions may be done digitally or with a rubber mold. A digital impression includes a detailed scan of your teeth that can be shown on a computer. A rubber impression is also a reliable way to attain the details of your smile and show us right where the dental bridge should go to give you a stunning new look!

Permanent Bridge Placement

After sending your impressions to a lab, your dental bridge is created and sent back to our office. This can take one to three weeks depending on shipping time. Once we have your dental bridges, we’ll call you to schedule your placement appointment.

Before we permanently place your dental bridge, one of our dentists will check to make sure the bridge looks good and feels comfortable. Once you are ready, we will bond the abutments (dental crowns) to your natural teeth. If you are receiving an implant-supported bridge, we will attach the bridge to your implants and ensure a proper fit.

Before you leave our office we can show you how to take care of your dental bridge to help it last a long time. We can also answer any questions you have about your new bridge.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT DENTAL BRIDGES

How Long Do Dental Bridges Last?

The actual time a dental bridge can last varies. Although some may last 5–7 years, others may last 13–15 years. The length of time your dental bridge lasts depends on several factors, including:

  • Proper Care | Take good care of all of your teeth, including your bridge! Floss and brush every day, and keep your bridge as clean as possible.
  • Quality of Materials | At Valley Dental Solutions, we believe in using high-quality materials to construct our dental work.
  • Overall Health | Additional illnesses, including gum disease, heart disease, or certain types of cancers, can disrupt your oral health. Continue to visit us and your primary care provider regularly.

You may also want to protect your teeth if you play sports or grind your teeth at night. Ask us about a mouth guard if this is a concern for you.

Is It Hard To Eat With A Dental Bridge?

Have you tried to eat normally with a missing tooth? Do you get food stuck in the gap and space between your teeth? Eating without all of your teeth can make life annoying and frustrating.

Although some patients may worry that a dental bridge can make eating more difficult, the bridge actually improves your ability to eat. By filling in the space in your mouth with a replacement tooth, you restore the function of your bite.

Implant-supported bridges are especially helpful because they have posts that act as tooth roots to keep them stable. Your dental bridge is designed to fit perfectly inside your mouth so you feel and look amazing. A new smile is even better when your oral health is improved!

Will A Dental Bridge Change The Way I Speak?

Missing a tooth can make speaking more difficult. You might whistle when you speak, or you might start to lisp. Your tongue now pushes into the space where your tooth used to be, causing speech impediments.

We all have moments when we have to speak to or in front of other people. When you have a missing tooth, those moments can be stressful. A dental bridge can fill in the gap left behind by a missing tooth and improve your ability to speak clearly.

Dental bridges help your speech by:

  • Closing up the gap so air doesn’t whistle through.
  • Providing a barrier and support for your tongue.

Boosting your confidence is a breeze when you can speak well and you have a stunning smile!

How Should I Care For My Dental Bridge?

Taking good care of your dental bridge is important when it comes to making your smile last for years to come. We recommend the following:

  • Brush and floss every day | Brush twice a day using a soft-bristles toothbrush to prevent the accumulation of plaque. Floss at least once a day.
  • Floss underneath the bridge | For traditional bridges, you’ll need to clean the space between the pontic teeth and your gums. Use a floss threader or similar dental tool.
  • Continue regular dental cleanings and exams | Visiting the dentist is always important, regardless of whether or not you have dental work. Schedule appointments twice a year so we can check on your dental work, get rid of tartar, and keep your mouth healthy.

What Is The Cost Of Dental Bridges?

Traditional dental bridges are generally less expensive than implant-supported dental bridges. The price of dental bridges can vary widely depending on:

  • The type of bridge you need.
  • Your current oral health.
  • The location of your missing tooth.

When considering a dental bridge, you may want to think about all your options and what costs you want in the long run. A dental bridge can keep your teeth from shifting position, which means you can save money on orthodontics or dentures in the future.

Implant-supported bridges can also improve your jawbone density, keeping your teeth and mouth healthier. This also helps decrease your chances of developing serious gum disease and losing more of your teeth. If you have concerns, please contact us about our payment plans.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING YOUR EXAM AND CLEANIN

1

Detailed Dental Imaging

Digital x-rays are the preferred method of taking x-rays in today’s world. The digital x-rays are:
  • Safer | Digital x-rays use 80% less radiation than traditional x-rays. They are safe for everyone, even those who are pregnant.
  • Immediate | X-rays make for a quick diagnosis that can give you answers and present solutions faster than ever.
  • Precise | We can also zoom in on the image to get a clearer, more precise view of any problem areas.
2

Professional Dental Cleaning

Harmful bacteria tend to gather in hard-to-reach places on your teeth. A professional cleaning gets deep into all the spaces to help remove plaque. Your teeth will be carefully cleaned as we clear away mineral buildup along the edges of your gums.
We’ll finish off your professional cleaning by polishing your teeth. This leaves the surfaces of your teeth smooth and feeling the ultimate clean!
These cleanings are extremely important. If plaque and tartar are allowed to stay, they can cause serious problems including tooth decay and gum disease.
3

Examining Your Teeth and Gums

After the hygienist makes your teeth shine, one of our dentists will step in and give your mouth a comprehensive exam.
When we examine your mouth, we don’t just check for cavities. We also look for any early signs of oral cancer or symptoms of gum disease. This process is one of the most effective things we can do to protect your oral health from oral issues.
We can also use the information from your exam to predict future problems you’ll have. This way we can take steps to prevent those issues or prepare to meet them as necessary.
4

Recommendations

After your appointment, we’ll discuss your overall oral health and what next steps might be best for you.

Our general recommendations for good oral health include:
  • Brushing your teeth twice a day.
  • Flossing at least once a day.
  • Avoiding biting on hard objects like ice cubes or pencil ends.
  • Using a mouthwash with fluoride.
We want you to have a beautiful and healthy smile and that means giving you all the tools you need to be successful including tailored advice for your mouth and health.

WHAT IS THE BEST ROUTINE FOR GOOD ORAL HEALTH?

General dentistry is all about preventing oral issues that can be painful, debilitating, and expensive to treat. While Valley Dental Solutions can do a lot to help with that, so can you! Setting a daily routine for yourself can make a big difference.

Just like you need to wash your hair regularly, your mouth needs personal hygiene too. You’ll want to make sure you’re keeping it clear of bacteria as much as possible.

Brush

Brush twice a day, first thing in the morning and before bed. This gets rid of all the bacteria that develop while you sleep and the food remnants from your meals during the day. Make sure to get all of the surfaces of your teeth, and don’t forget to brush your tongue!

Floss

Floss at least once a day at bedtime. This helps you get all the food out of the cracks between your teeth so bacteria doesn’t have any leftovers to snack on while you’re sleeping. Flossing is one of the best things you can do to prevent gum disease.

Rinse

Rinse with mouthwash. After flossing, food and plaque debris can still be floating around your mouth. Rinsing with mouthwash can wash out those particles and leave your mouth clean and fresh. Many mouthwashes strengthen and protect your teeth against harmful bacteria.

Dental Exams And Professional Cleanings

Visit our office every six months. While brushing and flossing at home are both helpful and necessary for good oral health, only a deeper cleaning can continue to get rid of tartar and plaque. We also polish your teeth after a cleaning so they shine and feel smooth.

DO YOU HAVE OTHER DENTAL CONCERNS?

Visiting a dentist every six months is important for your oral health, but sometimes dental concerns arise between visits. Below are other concerns that should be examined and diagnosed by a dentist.

Red, Tender, Swollen, or Receding Gums

Many of these symptoms point to gum disease, a common yet serious issue that needs to be addressed quickly. There are regenerative gum disease treatments that can bring back your oral health.

Ongoing Toothache

Persistent achy teeth can signify a tooth infection. Regenerative root canal therapy can remove the infected tissue from inside a tooth with advanced technology and provide relief for toothaches.

Loose Permanent Teeth

Only baby teeth should fall out. If you start to notice that a permanent tooth has come loose, that is a dental concern. Dentists can diagnose and treat underlying issues and possibly save your tooth.

Unusual Tooth Sensitivity

It’s normal to feel some sensitivity to extremely hot or cold foods, but if this sensation becomes extremely painful or occurs frequently, there may be an underlying issue like a cavity or infection.

Jaw Pain

Some headaches and jaw aches are due to nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism) or issues with the TMJ. The temporomandibular joint is susceptible to injury, but many TMJ disorders are easily treated.

Persistent Mouth Sores

Mouth sores that keep returning or won’t go away could be a symptom of allergies, disease, or even cancer. Getting these sores looked at by a dentist can get you treatment and peace of mind.

Dry Mouth

Saliva is important to keeping your mouth clean and helping you break down food. You may experience dry mouth if you sleep with your mouth open or if you have issues with your saliva glands.

Persistent Bad Breath

Chronic bad breath can be caused by:

  • Improper dental hygiene.
  • Eating a diet poor in nutrients.
  • Dry mouth, often from sleep apnea.
  • Gingivitis or advanced gum disease.
  • Liver or kidney infections or diseases.

Pregnancy

Taking care of your teeth during pregnancy is an essential part of good oral health. Your hormone levels change drastically and can put you at risk for gum disease, halitosis, and other issues.
