SLEEP APNEA
If you have sleep apnea, you’re likely not aware of your symptoms, but those who sleep near you probably do. Sleep apnea is a dangerous and frustrating condition that causes a patient to:
- Stop breathing during sleep for several seconds at a time.
- Gasp and snort as they start to breathe again.
- Hold their breath for a few seconds hundreds of times every night.
The lack of oxygen, the strain on the body, and the lack of rest cause many health and safety problems. If you suspect you have sleep apnea, contact Valley Dental Solutions.
We have state-of-the-art devices for finding the blockage causing your sleep apnea. We can then craft a customized dental appliance to give you restful sleep again! Schedule a consultation with Dr. Diquattro, Dr. Allen, or Dr. Tam today.
HOW WE FIND THE SOURCE OF SLEEP APNEA
We commonly use two devices to test for sleep apnea at Valley Dental Solutions. They help us search for blockages that are stopping airflow and interrupting sleep.
Acoustic Pharyngometer
We use this device to send sound waves into the airway of our patients. Using sonar, the pharyngometer measures the airway and helps to point out any unstable areas.
The system creates computer graphics that help us see the narrowness and length of the airway. It uses proven standards to point out risk factors in the airway, which can cause sleep apnea.
These measurements only take 2–5 minutes, and they involve a gentle scanning of the throat through the mouth.
This device is amazingly designed to read reflected sound waves from the throat. It analyzes changes in the throat as they happen. And we’ll make sure you’re comfortable while we complete the scan.
Acoustic Rhinometer
This device uses sonar to quickly and accurately map the nasal airway. This lets our team detect any obstructions blocking the airflow.
This scan only takes about 30 seconds, and nothing is actually inserted into the nose.
Interestingly, this device is used every day by doctors checking for congestion, deviated septum, and other conditions. It is well-liked by medical professionals of all kinds.
A SLEEP APNEA MOUTH GUARD
Most sleep apnea today is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This is caused by a blockage in the airway—often your own tissue interrupting your air.
Once your sleep apnea is diagnosed and we find the blockage, our dentist will discuss solutions with you, such as a sleep apnea mouthguard.
Tissues around the throat often change shape with age. They start to make contact during sleep, vibrating in the airflow. This interrupts sleep and causes snoring and other health risks. A great solution is a sleep apnea mouth guard, which:
- Gently repositions the jaw during sleep.
- Opens the airway more, preventing snoring.
- Allows more oxygen to reach your brain and body.
- Is easy to place in the mouth before bed—and comfortable.
We will customize your mouth guard for your particular situation. It will efficiently move your teeth and jaw to just the right position for comfortable breathing.
DANGERS OF SLEEP APNEA
Sleep apnea can cause:
- Mood swings.
- Daytime drowsiness.
- Falling asleep at the wheel or at work.
- Headaches.
- Memory loss.
- Weight gain.
- Loud snoring.
- Waking with dry mouth.
- Fatigue.
- Muscle tremors.
Sleep apnea is also connected to major health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
In contrast, managing sleep apnea should give you restful sleep, more energy, a better mood, and much more! It can relieve headaches and other pain, improve memory and concentration, and reduce disease risk factors.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING YOUR EXAM AND CLEANIN
WHAT IS THE BEST ROUTINE FOR GOOD ORAL HEALTH?
General dentistry is all about preventing oral issues that can be painful, debilitating, and expensive to treat. While Valley Dental Solutions can do a lot to help with that, so can you! Setting a daily routine for yourself can make a big difference.
Just like you need to wash your hair regularly, your mouth needs personal hygiene too. You’ll want to make sure you’re keeping it clear of bacteria as much as possible.
Brush
Brush twice a day, first thing in the morning and before bed. This gets rid of all the bacteria that develop while you sleep and the food remnants from your meals during the day. Make sure to get all of the surfaces of your teeth, and don’t forget to brush your tongue!
Floss
Floss at least once a day at bedtime. This helps you get all the food out of the cracks between your teeth so bacteria doesn’t have any leftovers to snack on while you’re sleeping. Flossing is one of the best things you can do to prevent gum disease.
Rinse
Rinse with mouthwash. After flossing, food and plaque debris can still be floating around your mouth. Rinsing with mouthwash can wash out those particles and leave your mouth clean and fresh. Many mouthwashes strengthen and protect your teeth against harmful bacteria.
Dental Exams And Professional Cleanings
Visit our office every six months. While brushing and flossing at home are both helpful and necessary for good oral health, only a deeper cleaning can continue to get rid of tartar and plaque. We also polish your teeth after a cleaning so they shine and feel smooth.
DO YOU HAVE OTHER DENTAL CONCERNS?
Visiting a dentist every six months is important for your oral health, but sometimes dental concerns arise between visits. Below are other concerns that should be examined and diagnosed by a dentist.
Red, Tender, Swollen, or Receding Gums
Many of these symptoms point to gum disease, a common yet serious issue that needs to be addressed quickly. There are regenerative gum disease treatments that can bring back your oral health.
Ongoing Toothache
Persistent achy teeth can signify a tooth infection. Regenerative root canal therapy can remove the infected tissue from inside a tooth with advanced technology and provide relief for toothaches.
Loose Permanent Teeth
Only baby teeth should fall out. If you start to notice that a permanent tooth has come loose, that is a dental concern. Dentists can diagnose and treat underlying issues and possibly save your tooth.
Unusual Tooth Sensitivity
It’s normal to feel some sensitivity to extremely hot or cold foods, but if this sensation becomes extremely painful or occurs frequently, there may be an underlying issue like a cavity or infection.
Jaw Pain
Some headaches and jaw aches are due to nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism) or issues with the TMJ. The temporomandibular joint is susceptible to injury, but many TMJ disorders are easily treated.
Persistent Mouth Sores
Mouth sores that keep returning or won’t go away could be a symptom of allergies, disease, or even cancer. Getting these sores looked at by a dentist can get you treatment and peace of mind.
Dry Mouth
Saliva is important to keeping your mouth clean and helping you break down food. You may experience dry mouth if you sleep with your mouth open or if you have issues with your saliva glands.
Persistent Bad Breath
Chronic bad breath can be caused by:
- Improper dental hygiene.
- Eating a diet poor in nutrients.
- Dry mouth, often from sleep apnea.
- Gingivitis or advanced gum disease.
- Liver or kidney infections or diseases.
Pregnancy
Taking care of your teeth during pregnancy is an essential part of good oral health. Your hormone levels change drastically and can put you at risk for gum disease, halitosis, and other issues.
